New Hampshire
a state in the northeastern U.S., with a short border on the Atlantic coast, one of the six New England states; pop. 1,235,786; capital, Concord; statehood, June 21, 1788 (9). It was the first colony to declare independence from Britain in 1776 and then became one of the original thirteen states.
